THE EARTH has reached a point in space called Aphelion, where it is farthest from the Sun in its yearly journey around it. This happened on Friday, July 5, 2025.
At Aphelion, the Earth is about 152 million kilometers away from the Sun—slightly more than the usual 147 million kilometers when it is closest in January. But scientists say this is completely normal and happens every year.
Some messages on social media are wrongly warning that this will cause extremely cold weather, flu outbreaks, and breathing problems. But experts say these claims are false.

“The change in distance is small and does not cause big changes in temperature,” an officer from the Ghana Meteorological Agency explained. “It’s the tilt of the Earth, not the distance from the Sun, that controls the seasons.”
In fact, Ghana and many other countries near the equator are still in their usual warm seasons. No major cold weather or health problems are expected because of Aphelion.
While it’s always good to take care of your health, experts say there is no need to panic, buy extra vitamins, or expect sudden cold waves because of this event.
Aphelion is natural, safe, and has occurred every year without harm. People are encouraged to check reliable sources for accurate news and not believe scary messages online.
