Family of Ghanaian Student who was Murdered in Latvia petition the Foreign Affairs Ministry to intervene and ensure justice is served.
Spokesperson of the Family, Madam Sarah Nyenejah Nimely who revealed that the body of the deceased Nana Agyei Ahyia will arrive at Kotoka Airport at 5:30pm stressed that it was in the interest of government to ensure that full blown investigation is conducted in order to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Nana Agyei, a first-year Electrical Engineering (Adaptronic) student at Riga Technical University, died on June 4, 2025, after enrolling at the institution in July 2024. His death has sparked concerns both within his family and at Ghana’s diplomatic mission in Europe.

The family in Ghana has demanded justice and a full-scale investigation following the suspicious death of their 18-year-old relative, Nana Agyei Oduru Ahyia, a student in Latvia.
According to the family, Nana Agyei had been living in an apartment on Baznicas Street in Riga. On June 1, just three days before his death, he reportedly sent a disturbing voice note claiming he had been poisoned. On June 4, his relatives were informed that he had allegedly fallen from the sixth floor of his apartment and died.

On behalf of the William Oduro Ahyia and the Nimely family, resident in Ghana and Al Ruwais, Abu Dhabi, UAE, we extend our sincere gratitude to your esteemed office and the respective teams in Ghana and Germany for the support rendered to our family following the tragic death of our son, Nana Agyei Ahyia, in Latvia, where he was pursuing undergraduate studies.
We write to respectfully request the assistance of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration in addressing several concerns regarding the investigation conducted by the Latvian Police. During our recent visit to Latvia, we were accompanied by representatives from the Ghana Embassy in Berlin and met with the lead investigator Mr. Arturs Tucs on the case. However, we observed a number of troubling lapses that raise serious questions about the integrity and thoroughness of the investigation:
The conclusion of suicide was reached without the presentation of substantial evidence to support this finding.
We were not provided with any photo evidence, forensic reports, or investigative documentation.
There was no indication that, CCTV footage at the premises and nearby had been reviewed as part of the inquiry.
No forensic analysis or report was shared regarding his residence, nor was such an investigation deemed relevant by the police.
The mortuary reported that the deceased was fully clothed, including socks, scratch on his forehead but no broken bone, which appears inconsistent with someone believed to have fallen from a sixth-floor window. This raises doubts about whether the scene was staged.
Prior to his death, our son had informed us—via a recorded voice message—that he had been offered a drink by two Latvian acquaintances. Shortly after consumption, he became disoriented, fled his apartment, lost consciousness, and was hospitalized. Medical reports confirmed poisoning by an unknown substance. However, the police did not pursue this lead or identify and question the individuals involved but our son mentioned in the audio message that the police released the two Latvians who poisoned him.
Our request to access Nana Agyei’s personal electronic devices, particularly his phone and laptop, was denied. Given his habit of recording personal activities, we believe critical evidence could be stored on these devices, and we are concerned that vital clues may be lost or tampered with.
In view of the above, we are deeply dissatisfied with the handling of the investigation and believe that a more comprehensive, professional, and impartial inquiry is warranted to ascertain the true cause of death.
We humbly appeal to your office to engage the appropriate diplomatic channels to request the Latvian authorities to reopen the case and conduct a more thorough investigation. This is essential not only to uncover the truth but also to provide closure and peace of mind to our grieving family.
We trust in your commitment to protecting the interests of Ghanaian citizens abroad and are hopeful for your swift and compassionate intervention.
