Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana (IEAG) has appealed to Chief Of Staff to intervene in the ongoing congestion at the Ports

Addressing a news conference in Accra on Monday (September 14 2026), the Executive Secretary of IEAG, Samson Asaki Awingobit stressed that recent  port congestion is frustrating it’s members adding that the current challenge requires the urgent attention of the Chief of Staff.

“Currently we are struggling. If something is not done there could be a crash at the port in December. Chief of staff should have an interest.”, Mr. Awingobit stressed.

The Executive Secretary bemoaned the governance structure at the Ports describing it as cumbersome and bureaucratic maintaining that there was the need to re-look at the governance structures in order to de-congest the port and make business seamsless.

“Sometimes it takes 9 hours to work on containers instead of a lesser time”, Mr. Awingobit emphasized.

He also expressed worry over government agencies like EPA, NACOC and MPS conducting container  inspections on a separate dates when those inspections he said, could be done concurrently in a day to save working and operational time for members of the IEAG.

“When a container comes to the port, EPA, NACOC MPS have interest. instead of them to come together and do the inspection, they do it on a different days. This frustrates our members”, he lamented.

Mr. Awingobit therefore called for a national dialogue to assess the situation and  fast-track the decongestion challenges at the Port.
