Ghana Health Service (GHS) has intensified the seasonal Malaria ChemoPrevention Campaign in seven regions namely Upper East, Upper West, North East, Northern, Savannah Bono East and Oti regions.
Addressing a news conference in Accra on Wednesday (July 1, 2026), the Director- General of the Ghana Health Service,(GHS) Dr. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea revealed that the ongoing vaccination is aimed at protecting children aged 3 to 59 months.

He explained that the SMC entails giving the anti-malarial medicine Sulphadoxine pyrimethamine Amodiaquine (SP-AQ) to children 3 to 59 months every month for for 4 to 5 consecutive months starting at the rainy season when malaria transmission is high.
He said this year’s campaign has been strengthened through the digital registration using the Ghana Malaria Information System (GMIS).
Dr. Kaba emphasized that the GMIS comes with enhanced supervision, improved safety monitoring and continued door-to door delivery by trained Community volunteers.
“SMC is one of our most effective malaria prevention interventions reducing malaria episodes among children by up to 75% when all treatment cycles are completed”, the Director -General said.
He revealed that the first dosing cycle (cycle 1) for the 2026 Malaria Chemoprevention has been successfully completed in Upper East, Upper West, North East and Oti regions reaching thousands of eligible children with this life-saving malaria medicine.
The Director General who said the Malaria Chemoprevention vaccine is free also said it comes with free Insecticide Mosquito nets adding that the two contribute to evidence based malaria prevention.
Dr. Kaba therefore appealed to the media to rally support for this campaign and Parents and care givers to make their children available for the vaccination and the Insecticide treated nets.
“We encourage all Parents and Caregivers of children aged 3 to 59 months to welcome our trained community health volunteers into their homes to ensure that every eligible children receives the full course of the treatment”, he emphasized.
Representatives from the Ghana Education Service, Food and Drugs Authority among others took turns to endorse the campaign and encouraged Parents and Caregivers to be involved.
