PRESS STATEMENT

For Immediate Release
Date: Friday, 27th February 2026
STATEMENT 0N RECENT PIRATE ATTACKS AND RESCUE OF 71 GHANAIAN FISHERMEN
The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture has noted with deep concern recent pirate attacks targeting Ghanaian fishermen.
The Ministry is, however, relieved to confirm the safe rescue of all seventy-one (71) Ghanaian fishermen who were recently attacked and held at sea. We commend the Ghana Armed Forces, the Ghana Navy and the Office of the President for their swift, coordinated and professional response.
The Ministry also acknowledges the important coordinating role played by the Hon. Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya West, Hon. Gizella Tetteh-Agbotui, whose engagement with affected fishing communities and state institutions contributed significantly to the successful rescue.
Government remains firmly committed to protecting Ghanaian fishermen and securing our territorial waters. The recently enacted Fisheries and Aquaculture Act, 2025 (Act 1146) strengthens enforcement, monitoring and safety mechanisms within the fisheries sector.
In line with these reforms, the Ministry is implementing additional measures, including improved registration and licensing of fishing canoes, introduction of GPS tracking and long-range communication systems for artisanal vessels and the rollout of insurance and pension schemes for fishermen. Government is also enhancing naval patrol capacity to strengthen surveillance, deterrence, and rapid response at sea.
The Ministry urges fishing communities to remain vigilant and to report suspicious activities promptly. Fisheries remains a vital pillar of food security, employment and coastal stability and Government will continue to act decisively to keep Ghana’s seas safe and secure.
