WORLD OCEANS DAY 2026: GHANA REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABLE
OCEANS

The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture underscores Ghana’s unwavering dedication to safeguarding the nation’s marine resources and advancing sustainable fisheries governance.
Speaking on this Global Day of Reflection and Action, Hon. Emelia Arthur, Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, emphasized the critical role oceans play in sustaining life, supporting livelihoods, and driving economic growth.
“Our oceans are the lifeblood of our planet. In Ghana, they provide food security, employment, and cultural heritage for millions. As custodians of these waters, we must act with urgency and responsibility to protect them from overexploitation, pollution, and climate change.
Today, I reaffirm Ghana’s commitment to transparency, innovation, and resilience in fisheries governance, ensuring that our oceans remain abundant for generations to come.

The Ministry continues to work closely with local communities, regional partners, and international organizations to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, strengthen aquaculture development, and promote compliance with conservation measures. As part of these efforts, Ghana is also expanding Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) to conserve biodiversity, restore fish stocks, and enhance resilience in ocean governance. Notably, early this year, Ghana declared its first Marine Protected Area at Greater Cape Three Points in the Western Region, a landmark step in safeguarding critical marine habitats and strengthening ocean stewardship.
World Oceans Day serves as a reminder that collective action is essential. Ghana calls on all stakeholders, governments, civil society, and citizens, to unite in protecting the oceans that sustain humanity.
