President John Dramani Mahama has commended the Managing Director of Ghana Water Limited, Adam Mutawakilu, for his role in advancing the long-delayed Damongo Water Project.

Speaking at the 50th anniversary celebration of the Gonjaland Youth Association in Buipe, the President highlighted access to safe water as a critical national priority and praised Mutawakilu’s efforts in pushing the project forward.

“With regards to access to safe water, we know it is a right and not a privilege. I want to thank my younger brother for the very good work he has done; we did not send him to the Ghana Water Company for nothing,” he said.

“He has done all the legwork, and I am happy to announce that just last week, the Minister for Finance signed the commitment letter for the Damongo Water Supply System to start.”

The announcement was met with relief among residents of Damongo and surrounding communities, where water shortages have persisted for years.
President Mahama said the signing of the commitment letter paves the way for procurement processes and eventual construction works on the project.

The Damongo Water Project has been a longstanding concern in the Savannah Region, with local leaders and residents repeatedly calling for intervention to address chronic water challenges

Since assuming office in January 2025, Mutawakilu—popularly known as Garlus—has led reforms at Ghana Water Limited aimed at improving operations, strengthening administration, and expanding water supply systems across the country.

His efforts include ongoing work on major water infrastructure projects such as the Damongo, Tamale, and Yendi water systems, in line with the government’s broader agenda to expand access to potable water and meet global development targets.

Officials say preliminary processes for the Damongo project, including administrative and ministerial approvals, have been fast-tracked, culminating in the recent financial commitment secured from the Ministry of Finance.
