A Ghanaian lecturer based in the United States, Kofi Akamani, 48, has been shot dead in Illinois, United States.
Akamani was a professor in the Department of Forestry at Southern Illinois University (SIU). He died on Saturday following a shooting at a home located between Murphysboro and Carbondale, according to a news release from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.
The sheriff’s office said deputies responded to a residence off Lake Road at about 5 p.m. after receiving reports of an active shooting.
Akamani was rushed to Memorial Hospital of Carbondale, where he was pronounced dead from injuries sustained during the shooting, authorities said.
In connection with the incident, Betty Akamani, 35, was arrested and is facing multiple charges, according to the sheriff’s office.
However, as of Sunday afternoon, the Judici court records website did not show any 2026 criminal charges for Betty Akamani.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation, and further details are expected as authorities continue their investigation.
