Nice, France – 11th June 2025 The Republic of Ghana has once again demonstrated its strong commitment to sustainable ocean development during its participation in Ocean Action Panel 6 at the Third United Nations Ocean Conference in Nice, France.

The session focused on “Advancing Sustainable Ocean-Based Economies, Sustainable Maritime Transport, and Coastal Community Resilience, Leaving No One Behind.” Representing Ghana was Mr. Ebow Mensah, Administrator of the Premix Fuel Secretariat, who shared the country’s integrated vision for a resilient, inclusive, and environmentally responsible blue economy.

Ghana emphasized that while the ocean is vital for economic growth, food security, and climate resilience, true sustainability requires leaving no one behind, particularly vulnerable coastal populations. Ghana’s key interventions included: Developing the Blue Economy: Ghana is progressing toward establishing a national Blue Economy Commission to coordinate investments in sustainable fisheries, eco-tourism, marine biotechnology, and offshore renewable energy. Greening Maritime Transport: The country is modernizing its ports and shipping industry through the Ghana Maritime Authority, aligning with the IMO strategy to reduce emissions and promote energy-efficient transport solutions.

Enhancing Coastal Resilience: Nature-based solutions such as mangrove restoration, climate-resilient infrastructure, and the Fisheries Alternative Livelihood Programme are helping protect coastal communities and diversify incomes. Gender-inclusive policies are also prioritized to ensure equal opportunities for women and marginalized groups. Ghana called on the international community to:
Ÿ Increase investments in sustainable ocean-based sectors, with equitable access for developing countries;
Ÿ Accelerate the shift to low-carbon maritime transport through innovation and partnerships;
Ÿ Boost funding for climate adaptation and disaster preparedness in coastal regions; and
Ÿ Prioritize support for small-scale fishers, youth, and local entrepreneurs in blue economy initiatives.
Ghana’s participation in Ocean Action Panel 6 underscores its enduring commitment to sustainable ocean governance, bold climate action, and inclusive socio-economic transformation across its maritime and coastal sectors.
