Access to Science is on a Decline; We Need to Invest More in Science Education-Haruna Iddrisu to IYQ Leaders

Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu has called for heavy investment in science education stressing that access to Science is on a decline.

He argued that science education is critical to the sustainability of humanity, expressing worry over the declining interest in science.

The Minister made the statement at the Global Closing Ceremony of the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ2025) held in Accra on Tuesday (February 10-11, 2026), under the theme: “Celebration and Reflection: The Quantum Legacy”.

He therefore urged African leaders to close the access to science gap by investing and prioritizing science for that matter quantum science and technology.

Hon. Iddrisu later stressed that Ghana’s choice to host the closing ceremony of the global event affirms the Country’s commitment to investing and prioritizing science education.

The President of Institute of Physics, Michelle Dougherty who delivered a key note address on the theme “A Century of Quantum Science :Celebrating 100 years of Discovery, Impact and the next Frontier for Humanity” underscored the significant role quantum science plays in our everyday life.

She disclosed that in medicine, quantum science and technology helps in medical imaging and diagnosis whilst in physics it helps in light-emitting diodes(LEDs).

Ms. Dougherty also revealed that in computing, quantum science helps in processing complex information quicker than normal, stressing the need for quantum science to be at the front burner of every government.

Touching on the IYQ 2025, the President of Institute of Physics, said the global event is aimed at raising awareness on quantum science.

She commended Ghana for hosting the event and urged all governments to take quantum science seriously.

“Whenever quantum science progresses it has positive impact on humanity”, she said.

Solidarity messages were taken from partner institutions such as the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology, UNESCO, UNFP, APS, all of whom pledged their commitment to place premium on quantum science and technology.
