71 Ghanaian Fishermen who were Taken Hostage at Sea on Wednesday have been rescued by Ghana Armed Forces (GAF)
A statement issued on the Facebook wall of the Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya, Gizella Tetteh-Agbotui said in part:
“71 Fishermen Ghanaian Fishermen Taken Hostage at Sea, Rescued by GAF
We thank God for a safe rescue mission for 71 fishermen , 47 of them from Senya Bereku.
An armed robbery/piracy attack on 6 canoes last night resulted in a tense situation for the whole Senya Bereku community.
Four (4) of them have docked in senya bereku and two (2 ) were escorted to Tema.
All men are safe and have had the necessary health checks.
There were NO hostages taken. They took their outboard motors , generators and fuel but thanks to technology we could communicate with some of them whose phones were still on
Special thanks to the Office of the President, Ministry of defence, National security, Ghana navy, Ghana army, Ghana police, Marine police, NADMO, Central Regional administration, Awutu Senya District Assembly , Senya canoe owners association and all well wishers.
Truly grateful for this support.
Mr.President J.D.Mahama, thank you for the call and concern. Everyone is fine now. 🙏
Earlier, GAF issued a statement in connection of the robbery to update the public about the rescue mission.
