Dozens of Electrochem Ghana Limited workers in Ada have taken to the streets to protest the termination of their contracts last Friday, August 15, 2025, by the McDan Group subsidiary.

The workers, who claim the dismissals were carried out without proper notice or procedure, are demanding answers from management.

Adom News Tema Regional Correspondent Issabella Gidiglo Ave reported that the protest, which brought a halt to some operations at the company’s site, saw workers express frustration over the manner in which their employment was terminated.
Many of them argued that the company, a major player in Ghana’s salt industry, had disregarded due process.

“They terminated our contracts without any notice, which is not the right procedure,” one worker, who wished to remain anonymous, said. “We are calling on management to come out and tell us why our contracts were terminated. They need to give us answers.”

Electrochem Ghana Limited, a subsidiary of the McDan Group of Companies, holds a 41,000-acre concession for salt production in the Ada Songor lagoon.

The company’s operations are a vital part of the local economy, and the abrupt termination of contracts for what is estimated to be dozens of workers could have a ripple effect on the community.
The company has invested over $88 million in the concession to date.

The workers’ protest highlights a key provision of Ghana’s Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651), which governs Section 15 of the Act requires that a contract of employment be terminated in a clear and documented manner, with an appropriate notice period or payment in lieu of notice. The workers’ claims of being terminated “without any notice” raise serious questions about the company’s adherence to this legal framework.

As of the time of this report, management of Electrochem Ghana Limited had not yet released a public statement on the protest or the reasons behind the mass termination.
Security personnel were present to monitor the situation and prevent the protest from escalating into violence.
