Registrar of the Traditional Medicine Practice Council (TMPC), Dr.(MH) Yakubu Tobor Yusuf, has vowed to Sanitize the Alternative Medicine Space aimed at ensuring efficacious Alternative medicines.

Speaking after the swearing-in of the newly inaugurated Governing Boards of several health regulatory bodies in Accra, Dr. Yusuf emphasized that between 60 to 70 percent of Ghanaians depend on traditional medicine as their first line of healthcare.

Given its importance, he stressed the urgent need to standardize practices and products within the sector.

“Our biggest challenge has always been about standardization. Ghanaians have long demanded proper regulation in a field they deeply rely on. With the inauguration of our board, we are now better positioned to work with relevant agencies like the Food and Drugs Authority and the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research to guarantee that herbal products on the shelves and services offered by traditional practitioners are safe and properly certified,” he said.

Dr. Yusuf assured the public that the TMPC will intensify public education, tighten licensing requirements, and monitor compliance to ensure that practitioners are trained and certified before operating. He called for public trust as Ghana deepens its investment in traditional and alternative medicine.

“We want Ghanaians to walk into any herbal center or spa knowing they are receiving services from trained and licensed professionals,” he concluded.
