The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has inaugurated the board of Health Training Institutions in Accra, tasking members to provide strong governance and strategic direction to improve the country’s health training system.

Speaking at the ceremony on Tuesday, March 17, the Minister described the appointment as both an honour and a responsibility, emphasising the critical role the board will play in ensuring that the institutions are managed efficiently, responsibly, and in the national interest.

“You are entrusted with an important governance mandate at a critical time in the development of our health professional education in our country. Your role is to provide oversight, guidance and strategic support to ensure that these institutions are managed efficiently,” he said.

He further indicated that government policy is shifting towards specialised nursing and professional training, rather than focusing solely on expanding the number of training institutions.

“Government is not only opening and building nursing training institutions, but what we are doing at this point is to concentrate on the specialities.

“We all know that we have introduced what we call ‘Mahama Cares’ with dedicated funding for the treatment of non-communicable diseases.

“There is a huge gap about the professionals who will help treat these diseases, and as a government, our policy must address that gap,” he stated.
