In a bid to take stock of its past and progress made for the future, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has marked its 34th Anniversary celebration.

Speaking at the Commemorative ceremony at the Patty Headquarters on Wednesday June 10, 2026, the Chairman of the Party Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketiah highlighted the journey of the party with emphasis on the PNDC metamorphosing into NDC.

He emphasized that inspite of the difficulty the party went through in moving to a democratic rule, the gains made so far was worth it.

Moment of cutting the Anniversary cake

“The Journey has been difficult and tortious but today we can say NDC is the biggest party, the most successful and the best internally democratic party in the history of this country” the Party Chairman stressed.

“We didn’t change to democratic rule just because Ghanaians didn’t like the PNDC but on hindsight there were pressures from international community”, he added.

Mr. Nketiah, also known as General Mosquito, profoundly stated that there shall be no more coup detat in the country explaining that the past coup detats are past and were necessary at the time.

He recounted how late Jerry John Rawlings, then the military leader of the country ceded to views of Ghanaians for a democratic rule following consultative Assembly and subsequent Referendum.

“Jerry Rawlings as President ceded to the views even though he warned of the consequences and the things he warned us about some of the things have started happening”, General Mosquito said.

The General Secretary of the Party Fifi Fiavi Kwetey on his part attributed the flooding situation in Accra as pervasive indiscipline of the people.

“June reveals pervasive indiscipline in our country” Mr. Kwetey said.

He said the floods decimating Accra is as a result of indiscipline owing to buying and building on wetlands.

He described all these as nonsense which required a strong leader fight the indiscipline like galamsey and building on water ways.

“We need leaders who have character to take action regardless of the consequences” the General Secretary fumed.

He therefore called for the days of PNDC where discipline was the highest order of the day maintaining that “as NDC, we must ensure that we are disciplined and what we do benefits the people”.

The ceremony which saw a wreath being laid for founder of the Party Jerry John Rawlings and hoisting of flags, also saw cadres such as Helen Adwoa Ntoso, MP for Klottey Korley Zanetor Rawlings, majority Leader Mahama Ayariga making solidarity statements.
