Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, has commended National Communications Authority (NCA) for leading the charge in the celebration of International Day for Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) with an ultimate objective of ensuring digital solutions for the PWDs.
She said such an initiative was critical in supporting the needs of PWDs.

The Minister made the statement in Accra during the a ceremony to Commemorate this years’ International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD), observed annually on December 3 to draw attention to the rights, dignity, and full participation of persons living with disabilities (PWDs).

“This year’s global theme, “Fostering disability inclusive societies for advancing social progress,” aligns with Ghana’s own theme: “Access to Technology and Assistive Devices for Persons with Disability.”

“I wish to commend the organizers for the innovation and creativity of people with disabilities through today’s exhibition”, she said.

She later reiterated government’s commitment to expanding access to assistive technology and strengthening policies that support inclusive development.
She described technology as “essential and not a luxury,” noting that it must be made available to PWDs to enable full participation in education, employment, healthcare, and civic life.

While acknowledging milestones achieved in promoting inclusion, she said challenges remain in giving full effect to the 1992 constitutional provision that guarantees the fundamental rights of all citizens, including minorities.
For his part, the Deputy Director General of NCA, Mr. Suleman Salifu who represented the Director General, said persons with disabilities often face barriers that restrict their access to these technological tools and by extension to education, financial services and entertainment.
He said these barriers hinder their full participation and ability to contribute meaningfully to society despite their remarkable potential and talent which could significantly contribute to national development.

The Deputy Director General emphasized that the NCA will be actively strengthening accessibility across its digital platforms.
“The aim is to enhance our digital platforms to ensure that every user including persons with disabilities can easily access information, navigate our services and engage with us independently”, he assured.

He said by this, would not only mean fulfilling their mandate of consumer protection but also promoting transparency, inclusivity and equal participation in Ghana’s telecommunication space.

The event was graced by the Minister for Technology, Innovation and Digitalization Hon Sam George who pledged his Ministry’s support for digital solutions for PWDs.
