Ghana has urged the international community to move from commitments to concrete action in tackling misinformation and disinformation, particularly as they are amplified by artificial intelligence.

Speaking at the 48th Session of the Committee on Information, Dr Winnifred Nafisa Mahama, Acting Director of Ghana’s Information Services Department, highlighted that the global information space is under increasing pressure, with false information eroding trust, fuelling division, and undermining peace and security.

Ghana welcomed the United Nations Global Principles for Information Integrity but advocated the need for effective implementation, particularly through targeted capacity-building support for developing countries.

The country also highlighted the persistent digital divide, calling for sustained investment in both digital infrastructure and traditional media such as radio to ensure inclusive access to information.

Dr Mahama further underscored the importance of multilingualism, media and information literacy, and the protection of journalists.

She also called for strengthened support for the United Nations Department of Global Communications and United Nations Information Centres to enhance their delivery of credible, multilingual information worldwide.

Ghana reaffirmed its commitment to international cooperation to build a more inclusive, equitable, and resilient global information environment.
