CPRM to Establish Snake Farm to Produce Anti-snake Venom as Part of 50th Anniversary Celebration.

Centre for Plant Medicine Research (CPMR) is upbeat to establish a snake farm to enable them produce anti-snake venom.

This was disclosed by the Executive Director of CPMR, Prof. Alex Asase at the 3rd This was disclosed by the Executive Director of CPMR at the 3rd Oko Ampofo Memorial Conference held in Accra on Tuesday as part of the 50th Anniversary of the Centre. It was under the theme “Plant Medicine Research: Harnessing Our Heritage for Health and Wealth”

According to research anti-snake venom contributes to overall public health, especially in rural areas where access to medical facilities may be limited. It also reduces the number of snakebite-related deaths and disabilities.

These benefits of anti-snake venom according to the Executive Director would go a long way to strengthen and add impetus to the plant medicine ecosystem.

Prof. Asare who was praise pf Dr. Oko Ampofo for his contributions to the CMPR, expressed his commitment deepen enhance the research capabilities of the Centre to make it the hub for Plant medicine in Africa.

The Chief Director of Ministry of Health, Dr. Hafiz Adams, who represented the Sector Minister commended the Centre for its quest to produce anti-snake venom stressing that anti-snake venom is safe.

Dr. Adams who said herbal and traditional medicine will play a pivotal role in the Ghana Medical Trust Fund otherwise known as Mahama Care also announced the Ministry’s preparedness to upgrade the CPMR facility.

He added that through the support of the European Bank, the facility would be retooled with modern equipment and expanded laboratory to enhance the research capacity of the Centre.

He later paid glowing tribute to the founder and first Executive Director of the Centre.

Together let us harness full potential of Ghana’s botanical heritage”, Dr. Adams emphasized.

The ceremony saw 50th Anniversary cake been cut with solidarity messages from institutions including Ghana Federation of Traditional Medicine Practitioners (GHAFTRAM), Ghana Pharmaceutical Society and Traditional Medicine Practitioners Council (TMPC).
