Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo has admonished Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCES) in the region to work hard to ensure flooding is minimized in their jurisdictions.

According to the regional Minister, the call was necessary in the wake of recent heavy down pour and it’s accompanying flooding in some parts of the region.

Hon. Ocloo gave the admonition when she addressed a news conference in Accra on Thursday , May 28, 2026 on “Rainfall Preparedness and Flood Prevention”

“ I urge all MMDCES to minimize impact of flooding in your jurisdiction” She emphasized.

She however stressed that flood prevention is not the duty of government alone as it requires collective responsibility, maintaining that the cirizenry is duty bound to support government’s effort.

Touching on the measures taken by the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) in preparedness of the flooding, the Shai-Osusoku Member of Parliament revealed that the RCC has secured safe havens such as schools, churches and mosques stocked with relief items including mattresses, bed sheets, food and life jackets.

She added that in anticipation of this year’s flooding, the RCC embarked on demolition of unauthorized structures obstructing free flow of water.

“All unauthorized lorry terminals that obstruct water are to be removed”, the Minister directed.

She stressed that the RCC and NADMO are collaborating with the Ghana meteorological Authority to monitor the rainfall patterns and strengthen their emergency preparedness.

She later touched on the spillage of the Weija dam as a result of excessive flooding and advised Residents living in Weija and and other low lying areas to relocate temporary.

Street Light

The Regional Minister revealed that the RCC has fixed about 3000 Street Lights whilst others are being rehabilitated in the region.

She commended NADMO and the Security Agencies for their support during the demolition exercises and emergency preparedness exercises expressing her commitment to make Greater Accra Clean and flood resilient.
