Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Hon. John Jinapor has revealed that the Ministry is installing about 23,500 all in one solar Street lights to cover a distance of about 700 kilometers as part of a broader strategy to limit burden on the national grid.

He explained that street lights account to 400 to 600 mega watts of power hence the need to resort to the installation of the all in one solar street light.

The Minister disclosed this when he took his turn at the Government Accountability Series at the Presidency on Wednesday.

The Yapeu Kusawgu Member of Parliament further explained that the move is to take solar as the main focus and move the street lights away from the grid.

“The street lights depend largely on the grid and unfortunately these street lights come on during the peak period.
The difference between the peak period and off peak period ranges between 400 to 600 mega watts and streets lights account for more than 200 megawatt”, Hon Jinapor revealed.

“So if we take them off and put them on solar systems, it means that we will be shedding off about 200 megawatts and that would contribute significantly towards efficiency in the energy sector”, he added.

Hon. Jinapor also revealed that the Ministry is in talks with agencies, MDAs, and Schools to get them to install solar rooftops.

“And if we do that it means we would be bringing about efficiency and reducing the electricity bills of these institutions”, Hon Jinapor stressed.

The Minister who touched on all the sectors of the economy assured that the Ministry, upon assumption of office has put in strategic policies which he said are beginning to show positive strides in power stabilization.

He said the Ministry’s achievements which include the construction of a second gas processing plant, continuous power supply and Increasing Petroleum reserve and promoting local content are geared towards transforming the energy sector into the better energy sector we want as Ghanaians.
