President Mahama Launches One Million Coders Program to Train 1 Million Youth in coding

President John Mahama has launched the 1 Million Coders Programme aimed at equipping the youth with coding skills.

Speaking at the Launching ceremony in Accra on Thursday, the President stressed that the launch is a testament that Ghana is ready to lead in digital age.

According to him, the program does not only empower the Ghanaian youth with critical skill for 21st century work but also creates jobs for them to compete globally.

“We are laying a foundation for a new economy. This programme is an investment in our youth”, the President stressed.

According to the President over the next 4 years, the Program will train 1 million Ghanaians from coding to data analytics among others adding that the program will teach the beneficiaries how to solve critical problems.

“Let us consider what this means to our country in terms of job creation and economic growth” Mr. Mahama emphasized.

He said Estonia, UK and US have shown the way, stressing that Ghana would become a force to reckon with in the digital space with the launch of this program.

He urged the first cohort of 560 Trainees to take advantage of the programme maintaining that the program is a reminder of the hunger of opportunities and the task ahead of us as a country.

“You are not just Participants of this digital opportunity you are architects of Ghana’s digital future”, the President noted.

The Minister for Communications and Digitalization, Hon. Sam Nartey George revealed that about 91,847 people applied when the portal was opened stressing that it is an indication of how passionate the youth are about digital illiteracy.

He also noted that the program which is a flagship program, is in fulfilment of President Mahama’s commitment that no one is left behind in the digital age.

He said the initiative is to equip our young people with digital tool they need to survive.

The objective, he said is to train about 1 million people in Cyber security, Networking, Data protection and data Analytics at 4 Locations simultaneously.

The MP for Ningo- Prampram said the program is happening within the 120 days of Mahama’s government, an indication of his commitment to transform the economy, empower the youth and boost digital literacy in Ghana.
