He did not arrive at the Supreme Court overnight. He walked every rung of the ladder.

The story of Justice Senyo Dzamefe is the story of Ghana’s judiciary itself over the last four decades – from the Public Tribunals to the highest court of the land.

Justice Senyo Dzamefe

Born in Agogoe Lume near Ho, in the Volta Region, to the late Rev. Henry Esau Dzamefe and Mrs. Edith Patricia Dzamefe, the young Senyo started at Ho-Kpodzi E.P. School, Hohoe E.P. Secondary School and Jasikan Training College before entering the University of Ghana, Legon in 1979. He earned his LLB in 1982 and was called to the Ghana Bar in 1984.
The Long Climb
His journey began not in a wig and gown, but in service. National Service at the Attorney-General’s Department in Ho under Mrs. Sophia Adinyira.

In 1988, he joined the then National Public Tribunal as a Tribunal Chairman, presiding at the famous Tema Public Tribunal, popularly known as the White House, and as visiting chairman in Wa.

When the tribunal system was merged into the mainstream judiciary in 1994, he became Chairman of the Koforidua Circuit Tribunal.

In 2000, he was appointed a High Court Judge – one of the first two Tribunal Chairmen to make that transition. He served in Sekondi (2000-2002), Swedru (2002-2008) and then Accra’s Fast Track High Court, Court 4, handling serious criminal cases.

In 2010, he was elevated to the Court of Appeal, where he would serve for 15 years, becoming the longest-serving Justice of the Court of Appeal at the time of his elevation.

On 3 July 2025, President John Dramani Mahama swore him in as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Ghana at Jubilee House.

His full record, as captured during his vetting, tells it all:
State Attorney (1984-1987), Regional Tribunal member (1989-1996), Circuit Court Judge (1996-2000), High Court Judge (2000-2010), Court of Appeal Judge (2010-2025).
More Than Judgments
Justice Dzamefe also paid his dues in leadership. He served as Vice President of the Association of Magistrates and Judges of Ghana (AMJG) from 1996 to 2000, and as its President from 2018 to 2021. He represented the Lower Courts, the High Court Bench and the Court of Appeal Bench on the Judicial Council, and served on the Disciplinary Committee and Rules of Court Committee.

Ghanaians came to know him beyond the courtroom when he chaired the Commission of Inquiry into Ghana’s participation in the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil – investigating the Black Stars’ campaign, financial management and the infamous airlifting of cash. His Commission recommended at least three local players in the Black Stars, an end to state-sponsored supporter trips, and a ban on cash payments to players.
A Reformer at Heart
During his vetting on 16 June 2025, he did not just defend his record – he laid out a vision. Three months for criminal cases, six months for civil cases. Virtual courts nationwide, AI for transcription, more courts, motivated staff, and regional tribunals under Article 142 to decongest the system.

On accountability, he was blunt: Judges must declare assets, base decisions on evidence alone, and never suppress truthful investigative journalism.
The Pledge
At his swearing-in, speaking for his colleagues, he said: “Finally it has arrived.” He recalled how his children often asked why his name was missing from previous Supreme Court lists. Then he pledged what his entire career had prepared him for – to dispense justice without fear, favour, affection or ill will.

Justice Senyo Dzamefe is not a meteor. He is a mountain – built layer by layer, from Ho to Bolgatanga, Tema to Wa, Sekondi to Accra.

In a judiciary where seniority, patience and integrity matter, he has truly paid his dues.
John Dramani Mahama
