REJOINDER: “CALL LINDA OCLOO TO ORDER OVER SELECTIVE BILLBOARD DEMOLITIONS-AAG TO MAHAMA”
The Office of the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council (GARCC) has taken note of publications in the media calling on His Excellency the President to “Call Linda Ocloo to order over selective billboard demolitions —AAG to Mahama.”
We wish to respectfully clarify, and to personally assure the public and stakeholders, that the ongoing billboard regulation and standardization exercise within the Greater Accra Region is not initiated, directed, or supervised by the Regional Minister or the GARCC.
As Regional Minister, Hon. Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo has not sanctioned, ordered, or authorized any selective demolitions of billboards or outdoor signage.
The exercise in question is being conducted under the mandate of the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs through a duly constituted Technical Committee on the Regulation and Standardization of Outdoor Signage. It is therefore a national, institutional process and not a regional directive.
Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies are empowered by law to regulate signage within their jurisdictions. Their responsibilities include issuing notices of non-compliance and removing structures that fail to meet safety and permitting requirements. These actions are grounded in existing legislation and guided by public safety concerns, particularly where installations pose risks to motorists, pedestrians, and public infrastructure.
We further emphasize that this process has not excluded the industry. The Advertising Association of Ghana and other stakeholders are represented on the Technical Committee and have been part of the consultative and operational framework from the outset.
It is therefore inaccurate and unfair to personalize what is clearly an institutional and legally mandated enforcement exercise. Assigning responsibility to the Regional Minister misrepresents the governance structure and risks undermining public understanding of how regulatory processes are implemented.
As a matter of principle, Hon. Linda Ocloo remains committed to fairness, transparency, and constructive engagement with all stakeholders. Her Office will continue to support lawful processes that promote order, safety, and sustainable urban development, while encouraging dialogue to address concerns through the appropriate ministerial and stakeholder channels. We urge the public and media to ensure that responsibility aligns with mandate and that commentary reflects the collaborative structure already in place.
