A statement issued by the office of the Former President said the objective of the Lecture is to open conversation on Political Party Financing in Ghana and advocate for key reforms and regulations aimed at promoting transparent and inclusive financing.

On the Fundraising, the statement said “ the Fund raiser Platform is to lead the charge for Citizen participation and transparency in how political parties raise funds for their activities and how those funds are utilized”.

John Mahama’s Lecture and Fund Raiser Platform launch was occasioned by recent study by the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) which was sponsored by Adam’s Smith International which reported a number of interesting findings, among which is that sources of financing political campaigns in Ghana, generally derived from illegal activities.

The study cited galamsey activities, oil bunkering, fraudulent businesses, procurement dealings in the award of contracts among others as sources of financing political campaigns. Also the study reported a strong association between financing of political campaigns and organized crime.
