“We Want to Take National Sanitation Day As a Health Issue”- Local Govt Minister

Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim has disclosed that his Ministry will consider the National Sanitation Day as a Health Issue and do everything within his powers to sustain it.

He said the National Sanitation Day which was introduced by Julius Derbrah over a decade ago is dear to the heart of President Mahama hence the need for the Ministry to marshall all forces to make it work.

The Minister made these remarks at encounter with Editors held in Accra on Thursday.

According to him Ghana is engulfed with filth, culminating in cholera outbreak adding that in these of times of cholera, the best approach to stem the disease is through sanitation.

“Cholera is the health issue we have now. We should not be looking for vaccination.
The cure for cholera is sanitation”, the MP for Banda, stressed.

He revealed that 5million Ghana cedis has been allocated for the National Sanitation Day which is scheduled to be launched on 2nd April 2025 by President Mahama whilst the Exercise itself takes place on 5th April 2025.

The Exercise, he said will be marked on first Saturday of every month in all the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs)

Hon. Ibrahim therefore prevailed on the Editors and the media to own the National Sanitation Day as their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and from home awareness prior to day.

“Cholera doesn’t discriminate, sanitation too doesn’t discriminate. So we are in it together.
Take it[National Sanitation Day] as a your CSR and whip the sentiment so that Ghanaians will participate”, the Minister emphasized.

The Deputy Minister for the Sector, Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, on her part stressed that government intends to use the Sanitation Day to instil good environmental practices into the citizenry.

He said an enhanced and cleaned Ghana can boost Ghana’s tourism drive, hence called on all and sundry to participate in the Exercise.
