“What it means is that you didn’t need those over 200 contracts. And yet, somebody decided that he would sign those contracts,” he added.
The Yapei Kusawgu Member of Parliament commended the current management of the ECG for the decision to cancel the contracts, adding that would help curb the losses ECG has been experiencing over the years.
The Energy Minister also revealed that his ministry has submitted a report concerning the missing Electricity Company of Ghana(ECG) containers to the Attorney General’s office for necessary action.
He emphasized that the committee’s report has been forwarded to the Attorney General to prosecute individuals who may be found responsible for causing financial loss to the state.
“As Minister, I have had to work extra hard with the other stakeholders, and I want to thank the GHAPOHA staff, Chief Executive, and to thank the National Security Coordinator and his staff, and thank the Chief of Staff, Madam Akosua and co, for helping us to move those containers. It’s been a very, very difficult task, but like I said, we should never go down that path again. And as Minister, I will not tolerate that. If it happened in the past, it must not happen today. We’ve forwarded the full document to the Attorney General, he’s studying it, and if people are found culpable, and there are concomitant effects, the law will take its course. We are not victimising anybody,” he said.
It would be recalled that in March 2025, the Energy Ministry revealed that about 1,300 containers belonging to ECG could not be accounted for. Only 40 were recovered at the time. The Minister subsequently set up a special committee to investigate the matter.
After months of work, the committee traced over 2,600 containers, with about 1,500 cleared from the ports.
It is in light of the aforementioned that the Minister is emphasizing the prosecution of the culprits.
Hon. Jinapor later assured the staff and management of his support for them urging them to work hard to make ECG viable whilst he also ensures the guarantee of their thirteenth month salary.
Earlier, the Minister met the staff and management of VRA to acquaint himself with their operations.
