Head of Nursing and Midwifery at the Ministry of Health , Estel Ruth Opoku

Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the Hackaton last Friday (December 13, 2025), the Head of Nursing and Midwifery at the Ministry of Health , Estel Ruth Opoku explained that maternal mortality is very high in the country adding that Ghana has still not been able to achieve the WHO’s target of 70 per 100,000 live births.

“Maternal mortality is still high. 900 Women died from January to December”, she said.

She said it was the reason the hackaton was organized stressing that when midwives play a crucial role when it comes maternal mortality new born health and sexually reproductive health.

According to her , the WHO has confirmed that technological and innovative capacity building for Midwives would give them the need competencies to nip in the bud issues of MNCH and reduce it to the barest minimum.

“ So the hackaton actually brings people together to solve critical issues that are challenging to the country. When people are able to come together with these ideas, they are able to solve the problem and put up scalability plans and sustenability plans as well as implementing plans.

So the whole idea is to bring people with great ideas to reduce maternal mortality and new born child health”, the Head of Midwifery emphasized.
