Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has issued a strong ultimatum to pay-TV giant DSTV, demanding a reduction in its subscription prices by Wednesday, August 7, or risk having its broadcasting license suspended.

Addressing the media at the Government Accountability Series on Friday, August 1, Mr. George revealed that he had formally directed the National Communications Authority (NCA) to initiate the suspension process should DSTV continue to defy regulatory expectations on pricing.

“I have directed the NCA to act swiftly. If by the 7th of August DSTV has not complied, their broadcasting license will be suspended,” he declared.

According to the minister, the move follows a recent letter from DSTV defending its current pricing model. The company claimed the Ghanaian cedi has depreciated by more than 200% over the past eight years, making a price cut impractical.

But Mr. George unconvinced, stressed “DSTV claims the Ghanaian cedi has depreciated by over 200% in the last eight years, and therefore, they cannot reduce their prices,” he stated.

“My fidelity lies with the Ghanaian people. They have been cheated for years, and it is time we put an end to that.”
He stressed that foreign service providers must not be allowed to exploit Ghanaians under the guise of global economic pressures.

“We will not allow foreign service providers to take advantage of our citizens under the guise of economic pressures. Enough is enough,” the minister said.

The bold warning comes amid growing public dissatisfaction over DSTV’s subscription fees, which many Ghanaians consider excessive compared to neighbouring countries. The minister’s directive signals the government’s intent to protect consumer interests and hold multinationals accountable within Ghana’s digital ecosystem.
