This he said was necessary in building a stronger Cohesion within member states.

President Mahama made statement when he launched the 50th Anniversary of ECOwAS in Accra on Tuesday.

“Our community has earned a reputation as a respected arbiter in conflict resolution
This legacy of ECOWAS must be protected and guarded”, President Mahama stated.

He added that with Sustained dialogue and diplomacy “we can build a stronger cohesion.

He said the diplomatic principles within the member states must work for the interest of our people.

President Mahama later announced a scholarship package for one thousand students within ECOWAS to come study in Ghanaian Universities.

He said this is to help strengthen the bond between member states.

On his part, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa touted the democratic credentials of Ghana in the attainment of this feat by ECOWAS.

He said ECOWAS has evolved from a modest economic cooperation framework into a dynamic, multifaceted regional community, championing not only economic integration but also peace, security, democracy, and social development.

According to him, this 50th anniversary milestone offers the member states an opportunity to reflect on the challenges they have overcome, the progress they have made, and the sacrifices of those who envisioned a united, prosperous, and peaceful West Africa.

“It is also a time to reaffirm our unwavering commitment to the ideals upon which this Community was founded.
As we launch these celebrations today, let us look forward, together. The next chapter of ECOWAS must build on the foundations of the past, while boldly embracing the future. We must consolidate our gains in peace and security, deepen economic and political integration, and foster inclusive growth that benefits every citizen of this sub-region”, the North Tongu MP emphasized.
